Bookshop : A Brief History of Streatham
Book cover of A Brief History of StreathamA Brief History of Streatham
Graham Gower

Drawing on original sources the author recounts the story of Streatham. Beginning with the Romans and the archaeological finds in the area, which give us clues as to their presence. The Saxons were next to play a part in this story, followed by the Norman Conquest. The reformation of Henry VIII is also given a mention as an important point in Streatham's history before the author moves on to the Georgians, Victorians and Edwardians who oversaw the most dramatic changes the area has ever seen. From more recent times we are presented with evidence of Streatham's theatres and cinemas, and of the Blitz during World War II.
