Barba Woznica

The area between Tooting and Streatham in the late eighteenth century was known as Streatham Place. The estate was the property of Henry Thrale, owner of the Thrale Brewery in Southwark. In 1763 Thrale married Hester Lynch Salisbury, niece of Sir Thomas Salisbury. Together they resided in the residence at Streatham Place. The Thrales were keen entertainers, often dining with distinguished guests. The foremost of these was Dr. Samuel Johnson, lexicographer, author and critic, who became a close friend of the Thrales and often accompanied Hester to the pleasure gardens at Vauxhall. Other members of the Thrales' Streatham set were James Boswell, artist Joshua Reynolds, the actor David Garrick, the Irish writer Oliver Goldsmith. After the death of her husband, Hester married the Italian singer Gabriel Piozzi, whom she had met several years earlier.
